2016 Youth Peace Travel Team
Hey y'all! I'm Phoebe Hart. I'm a rising sophomore at Bridgewater College and I'm double majoring in Psychology and Spanish. With those, I want to bring the mental health conversation into as much of the world as I can, as well as work with kids/youth with mental illnesses and use my camping experience to find new forms of counseling or therapy that utilize our awesome Earth. My home church is Oak Grove Church of the Brethren in the Virlina District, and I'm originally from Southwest Virginia. On that note, apparently SWVA is one of the few places where it is acceptable to refer to a shopping cart as a "buggy." Anywhere else and no one seems to know what you're talking about. (Yes, I know that buggies are also the things behind horses). Anyway, Camp Bethel in Fincastle is where I first learned about the Church of the Brethren; I was a camper since age eleven, and I've been working there since I was fifteen. It's definitely one of the places I call home. Back at Bridgewater I am on the women's lacrosse team and swim team, and a few of my favorite things are climbing trees, jumping waves in the ocean, and standing on top of mountains. I'm pretty nifty with a pencil and paint brush, I like to go backpacking and whitewater kayaking, and I have more books than can fit in a standard dorm room. Lastly but not leastly, I am honored and ridiculously hype to be on YPTT this summer, and I can't wait to build some peace with all of you!
Hello friends! My name is Kiana Simonson. I grew up in Modesto California and now reside in Cincinnati Ohio. I am in the culinary program at Cincinnati state for nutrition science. I started attending Modesto church of the brethren as an early high schooler and have experienced blessings in abundance since. I enjoy swimming, reading, live music, the outdoors and laughing. I am so honored to be a part of the team this year!
Hey Y'all! I'm Jenna Walmer, a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania native. I have attended Palmyra COB since I was in the womb. Currently, I am majoring in Global Studies and Religion/Philosophy and minoring in Peace Studies at Bridgewater College. My most recent favorite flavor of ice cream is Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough; however, I am partial to anything with chocolate and chunks in it. My favorite past times include swimming, dancing, and adventuring to new places. I am blessed to be a part of the Youth Peace Travel Team this summer! I have been passionate about peacebuilding and camping for longer than I can remember, and I am ecstatic that I can combine the two this summer! I am looking forward to meeting lots of wonderful people, building meaningful relationships, and spreading peace and love to all.
Hello friends! My name is Sara White and I am super excited to meet many of you this summer. I grew up in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania and am a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. I am currently attending Carleton College in Minnesota and enjoying the many opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. I am thinking about majoring in political science and religion. This spring I will be studying in Washington, DC and working in the Church of the Brethren Office for Public Witness. There I will be learning about issues like mass incarceration and international trade deals and thinking about how we as Christians can live the example of Jesus. I also like to swing dance, sing folk songs, swim, and climb mountains. One of my favorite places in the world is Camp Blue Diamond where I was a camper for many years before working in the kitchen, lifeguarding, and counseling for the past four summers. I am very excited to be on the youth peace travel team because I love to think about how the Church of the Brethren can work to make positive change in the world.
